Taiwan has downed a Sukhoi 35/ Su-35 operated by the Chinese Air Force which had strayed in Taiwanese airspace. The island nation, which China claims in its entirety, is armed to the teeth with American hardware and is a thorn in the side of China.
China, taken aback by this turn of events, however has said that this was just a “try ball” and should not count. The Chinese Su-35 was not ready and did not know what hit it. The gully cricket phrase of India is apparently quite popular in China. Readers might remember their childhood when they got out on the first ball they faced in cricket. The “try ball” method was a potent tool to avoid embarrassment in that case.
It has to be noted that China recently faced many “try balls” on Indian frontier, where in June its 40+ soldiers were routed and killed by unarmed Indian soldiers. India also lost 20 brave-hearts. Just last week, it faced another “try ball” on the south bank of Pangong Tso.
In the meanwhile, Taiwanese authorities were attempting to get China out properly this time. They have apparently strengthened their air defenses and keen to see China try again.
